Its time to balance everyday life with vacation life! I have been looking forward to this, let’s be honest, since my last vacation.
My husband and I are not beach vacationers. We do not go to all-inclusive resorts and sip fruity drinks. We get bored. Easily. We are also creatures of habit so when we find somewhere we like we go there again and again. And again.
Thus, Vacationland’s Mount Desert Island. This is our third trip, and our second in two years. For those of you who don’t know, Mount Desert Island is most famously home to Acadia National Park and the seaside town of Bar Harbor, Maine. Its been noted as one of the coolest towns in the US (http://matadornetwork.com/trips/20-coolest-towns-us/11/) and I totally agree.
It’s the largest island off the coast of Maine and was named as such by the French explorer, Samuel de Champlain because the mountain tops are treeless. Cadillac Mountain is the largest and incidentally the first place in the continental US to see the sun in the morning. I highly recommend the trek up Cadillac, during sunrise or sunset, on foot or in a car. Its an amazing view of the Atlantic and the park. Last year we met a traveler from Switzerland who had traveled up from Boston just to see Cadillac Mountain and turned around and drove to New York once she hit the summit!
Some of the things we’ve done in the past:
- Dinner at the Reading Room – nice piano music for dinner, but not really our style
- Bar Harbor Beerworks – great for post-hike beers on the porch
- Kayaking on Long Pond
- Hiking, all the hiking
I’m looking forward to sharing some of our adventure with you over the next few days. We’re planning on doing some hiking, drinking some beer (usually to rehydrate post-hike) and eating Lobstah.
Have you been to MDI? Is there anything you can’t leave the island without doing or seeing?
